Chief Energy Transition Officer & Vice President, Planning, Conservation and Resource Adequacy

Mr. Farmer is the Chief Energy Transition Officer and Vice President, Planning, Conservation and Resource Adequacy and leads the planning of Ontario's electricity system to ensure it is reliable, resilient, and cost-efficient in the years ahead.

This includes assessing the future adequacy of Ontario's electricity supply and the transmission system, identifying system needs and securing the resources needed to meet system needs, including through the advancement of conservation efforts.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Farmer has held a variety of senior roles at the IESO and Ontario Power Authority in the areas of Power System Planning, Conservation, and Corporate Relations.  His career began with Union Gas where he focused on the residential and commercial markets, and was Director for Market Knowledge and Demand Side Management.

Mr. Farmer is a graduate of the Richard Ivey School of Business at The University of Western Ontario.

    Dramatic growth in wind, solar and energy storage alongside greater electrification of the economy will transform the power sector over the next decade. Wholesale power markets are evolving to accommodate the shifting landscape, but further adaptation will be needed to maintain reliable and resilient markets while achieving decarbonization objectives. Can wholesale power markets survive in a renewables-dominated future? What is the future for capacity markets and ERCOT’s energy-only market? How will resource adequacy planning evolve and be incentivized to handle increasingly dynamic power markets?
