Abbas Ghandi

S&P Global

Modeling and Forecasting Analytics Senior Program Director

Dr. Abbas Ghandi is a modeling and forecasting analytics senior program director with the Oil Markets and Downstream team at S&P Global Commodity Insights. With expertise in energy, transportation, economics, and policy, he oversees key initiatives on design and implementation of next generation forecasting tools that are used for short and long-term outlooks of demand, supply and trade of refined products and other energy carriers. Dr. Ghandi also leads the Medium and Heavy-Duty Vehicles (MHV) long-term outlook research and annual publications as part of the S&P Global’s Mobility and Energy Future Subscription Service. The study forecasts sales, fleet and energy demand of several MHV powertrains by 2050 and in two scenarios. Sales forecasts of the study is guided by a detailed total cost of ownership (TCO) long-term analysis of seven medium and heavy-duty vocations. The TCO analysis focuses on the cost parity between different powertrains including gasoline, diesel, diesel hybrid, compressed natural gas, LNG, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) as well as hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2-ICE). Within the TCO framework, Dr. Ghandi also manages long term forecasts of transport fuel prices including hydrogen prices at the regional level. Prior to joining the S&P Global, Dr. Ghandi served as a postdoctoral research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Energy Initiative. In this role, he led the long-term global fleet and energy demand forecasting of light-duty vehicles with a particular focus on BEVs, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and FCEVs by providing technical, economical, policy and financial expertise in all aspects of electric mobility and in particular vehicles, fuel, infrastructure, and policy development. Dr. Ghandi holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, a master’s degree in economics and a Ph.D. in transportation technology and policy from UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies, United States.

    Flying with Hydrogen

    Hydrogen

Promising progress has been made with hydrogen powered aircraft driven either by hydrogen fuel cells or using hydrogen derivatives as sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). Emerging consumption mandates like the EU's ReFuelEU Aviation is paving the way for further SAF adoption. Yet, the availability of hydrogen infrastructure and e-fuel synthesis at airports is not widespread, creating significant bottlenecks and stunted demand growth. Hear from aviation industry players on flying with hydrogen.
