Chief Executive Officer

Kyle Koontz joined bp in December 2016 and currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of bpx energy. Mr. Koontz previously served as the COO/VP of Development for BPX Energy, where he is responsible for the multi-year growth strategy and achieving technical excellence through proficient subsurface work and safe and consistent operations in drilling, completions, and field project development. In his time at bpx, he has helped initiate the oil strategy conversion in the onshore business, started a new central reserves team, led business units in the Midcontinent and Permian, and worked with the team to formulate a multi-year, low carbon, development strategy in support bp’s purpose of reimagining energy for people and our planet. Mr. Koontz earned a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from Oklahoma State University and a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. In 2015 Mr. Koontz received national recognition in Hart Energy’s Oil and Gas Investor “Top Thirty under 40” publication. In a span of 16 years Mr. Koontz has been involved in the prospecting and development of over 1,500 unconventional wells and over $10bn of capital investment. Prior to joining bp, he served as one of the co-founders and officers of Templar Energy where he helped the management team grow the start-up company into the nation’s 27th largest natural gas producer. Prior to that, Mr. Koontz served various roles at SandRidge Energy, and Wallace Engineering.
