ClearFlame Engines

Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Dr. BJ Johnson is CEO and co-founder at ClearFlame Engine Technologies. BJ earned his PhD in thermodynamics and mechanical engineering at Stanford University where he successfully built and modified diesel engines to run on cleaner fuel alternatives like ethanol, methanol and other sustainable fuels. His design created a sustainable diesel engine with the capability to reach net-zero emissions and even reverse greenhouse gases to yield a negative balance in carbon emissions while reducing the costs of long-haul trucking for fleets large and small. His purpose in founding ClearFlame is to reverse climate change. His vision builds on the existing infrastructure, talent pool and industrial assets we use today to deliver everything from car batteries and groceries to mining equipment and generators. ClearFlame’s goal is to convert the more than 3 million diesel trucks on the road today and turn them into clean-burning engines. To date, ClearFlame’s investor base includes the Department of Energy, Mercuria, Clean Energy Ventures and Breakthrough Energy Ventures. In 2021, BJ was named to the Grist 50 — a list of emerging leaders working on real-world solutions to the world’s biggest challenges.

ClearFlame Engines | Delivering Diesel Engine Performance with Ethanol or Methanol

Despite increasingly sophisticated vehicle technologies, greenhouse gas emissions from transportation are still increasing and logistics providers are feeling the pain.  Our motivation at ClearFlame is tackling climate change as aggressively and thoroughly as possible.  We are a technology company that is decarbonizing the hard-to-electrify segments of the trucking world by combining the efficiency of diesel engines with the low-carbon performance of ethanol and green methanol.
