Larry Cochrane is Managing Director and CTO for the Energy Industry in Azure Global Engineering. He is responsible for defining and driving Microsoft Azure’s global energy strategy and forging partnerships with customers and partners for Azure adoption. Cochrane’s in-depth knowledge and passion has been pivotal in managing Azure IoT organization for the Microsoft Energy Management building block Azure services, as well as establishing NERC CIPs compliancy for Microsoft Azure, support and management of engagements with customers executives, participation in utility industry standards setting bodies, and support for analyst engagements. Cochrane has also led initiatives such as the Microsoft Smart Energy Reference Architecture.
Prior to joining Microsoft, Cochrane was Vice President of Automation Systems Research & Development for AREVA and responsible for product development for Substation Automation, SCADA, Energy Management & Distribution Management, Market Management, Trading and Financial Settlement for the Electric Utility Industry. At AREVA, Cochrane established technology integration strategy for merger of 250Me Energy Management and Markets Business with 260Me Protection and Control Business. He served on the AREVA T&D Automation Steering Committee for 600Me Automation Business and worked to establish consistent processes and development approaches for worldwide R&D Centers of Excellence, including SEI CMMI program and agile development methodologies.
With more than 25 years’ experience, Cochrane has held numerous senior level positions and played pivotal roles in defining real-time control system experience ranging from Wind Turbines to very large-scale Energy Management and Markets Systems. He also has four years of very high-performance Flight Test Telemetry System Mission Support for NASA AMES Dryden facility at Edwards Air Force base. Cochrane brings direct product platform development and commercial support through his roles with Boeing, Datamax/NASA, ESCA, Alstom, and Areva.
