Justin Montgomery

MIT

PhD Candidate, Computational Science & Engineering

Justin Montgomery is a PhD candidate at MIT in the Computational Science & Engineering (CSE) program and a researcher in the MIT Energy Initiative. His research is focused on using machine learning and statistical modeling approaches to improve the forecasting of unconventional oil and gas well production rates. These probabilistic data-driven models can be used to guide decision-making—such as well design and placement—and to evaluate resource economics and availability. Mr. Montgomery has presented his research at the US EIA and has been featured in Bloomberg Businessweek and the Journal of Petroleum Technology. He has worked on a range of analytics projects for the petroleum industry (including with Shell, Accenture, BHP, and QRI) and he created shalestats.com, an open platform for evaluating Bakken well economics. Mr. Montgomery has received honors from the US Association for Energy Economics and the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences. He holds a BS in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University and an SM in technology and policy from MIT.
