Mark Hedges

Centrica

Head of Distributed Power Systems North America

Mark Hedges is responsible for building a new power generation business focused on flexible generation and storage in North America. The focus on flexibility is needed in order to help independent grid system operators (ISO’s) balance their grids as the penetration of renewable generation connecting to the system increases over the coming years. Flexible generation is therefore required to facilitate the transition to a lower carbon electricity grid. With nearly 20 years of experience working in the power industry, Mark has held various operational roles with a number of different generation technologies including waste, energy and combined cycle gas turbines. Prior to his current role, Mark led an optimization team for a portfolio of UK assets. Mark holds a MS degree in Environmental Pollution Control and a BEng degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Leeds.

Distributed Energy Resources: New opportunities & challenges at the grid edge

    Panel Power

Distributed Energy Resource (DER) adoption—including solar PV, battery storage, electric vehicles, and responsive loads—continues to expand globally. Distributed solar PV alone is poised to add an average of 4 GW per year in 2019 through 2021 in the United States, increasing installed capacity by about 60% relative to 2018. Distributed battery energy storage is on a similar path, with a likely doubling of capacity from 2018 to 2020. The transition to managing more resources at the grid edge comes with numerous risks and opportunities for electric utilities and providers of enabling technology and services. What key factors will set the pace of transition? How radically will the industry be transformed and in what time frame? What lessons can be drawn from regions where DER penetration is already significant?
