Maikanti Kacalla Baru is a First Class Honours Degree holder in Mechanical Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria (1982) and a PhD holder in Computer Aided Engineering from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom (1987). He held various Top Management positions in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) from May 1991 including: Manager, Operations, Procurement Management Services (PROMAS); Executive Director, Operations, Nigerian Gas Company (NGC); Managing Director, Hyson (Nigeria) Limited; Group General Manager, Greenfield Refinery Projects Division; General Manager, Gas Development Division and later, Group General Manager, National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), where he effectively supervised the Nation’s investment in the Upstream Sector of Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Industry covering six Joint Ventures, sixty-two Production Sharing Contracts and other ad-hoc assignments in the Upstream Sector); Group General Manager LNG Investment Management Services (LIMS); Group Executive Director, Exploration and Production; Technical Adviser (Gas Matters) to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and on July 4th, 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria appointed Dr. Baru as the 18th Group Managing Director of NNPC. Dr. Baru ranks as one of the most decorated Nigerians, which climaxed in him bagging the prestigious Forbes’ African Oil and Gas Industry Man of the Year in 2017 and the Zik Prize for Professional Leadership in 2018 amongst several other awards. Dr. Baru is a Fellow, Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE); Fellow, Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FNIMechE); Fellow, Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (FNSChE); Fellow, Occupational Safety and Health Association, United Kingdom; Fellow, Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators of Nigeria (ICMC); Honourary Fellow, Nigerian Society of Engineering Technicians; Honourary Fellow, Nigerian Environmental Society (FNES HON); Honourary Fellow, Nigerian Metallurgical Society (NMS); Honourary Fellow, Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE); Honourary Fellow, Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Professional Fellow, Polymer Institute of Nigeria, Member, Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN); Member, Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) and Chairman of NGA Advisory Board; Member, Institute of Directors of Nigeria (IoD) and Member, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN).
