Andres Mantilla is the Director of the Colombian Petroleum Institute, the technology and innovation center of Ecopetrol. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Petroleum Engineering from Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia; an M.Sc. degree in Petroleum Engineering from Stanford University; and a Ph.D. in Geophysics, also from Stanford. Before joining Ecopetrol he worked for BP, Marathon Oil and Maersk Oil, where he was assigned to various exploration, reservoir engineering, and new ventures roles; managed appraisal and asset development groups; and gained exposure to E&P projects in Colombia, the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea, West Africa, Argentina, and the Middle East.
He currently leads the research and technology development, demonstration and implementation efforts of Ecopetrol, which focus on heavy oil processing, water management, enhanced oil recovery, advanced materials, and decarbonization. Andres has been affiliated to SPE, SEG, AAPG, and SPWLA. He volunteers as a member of the executive committee of Santander Competitivo, the Regional Competitiveness Promotion organization of his native state in Colombia.
