Wade Shafer is a Director for Power, Gas, Coal, and Renewables group at IHS Markit. His research focuses on western US and Canadian power market fundamentals, leveraging his background in renewables and distributed generation to analyze these evolving markets. As the lead power researcher for the IHS Markit multiclient study Reinventing the Wheel, Mr. Shafer has evaluated the impact of electric vehicles on power market fundamentals and new electric vehicle opportunities in the power industry. While at IHS Markit, he has also led the North American electricity demand forecast and covered solar power in North America. Mr. Shafer holds a BS from The George Washington University and an MS from Johns Hopkins University.

The declining cost of wind, solar, and energy storage—now competitive with natural gas generation in many markets—bolsters the demand for carbon-free electricity. Individuals, corporations, and governments look to electricity as the central fuel for a future low-carbon world. Power markets must evolve to incorporate this environmental demand alongside the existing tenets of the power industry—least cost and reliable. How will, and can, markets adapt to fulfill all three objectives simultaneously and efficiently? Are there limits to what markets can achieve? What are the implications for energy companies, investors, and customers? What lessons about market design have we already learned?
