Energy is essential to prosperity, hence enabling widespread access to energy that is reliable, affordable, and sustainable is a primary goal for any developing country. The stakes could not be higher: today, a billion people live without access to modern energy, with devastating consequences for their health, livelihoods, and environment. Yet this problem is notoriously sticky, and efforts to advance solutions tend to progress slowly. Why is this the case, and what can be done differently to accelerate development? Will advances in energy technologies change the equation? How should development organizations support national and local governments and communities to enhance energy access, what are the challenges of such partnerships, and what are the best practices?
