Senior Vice President

Glen Sweetnam is currently the Senior Vice President for the Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre in Tokyo, Japan.  Previously he has served in senior positions at the U.S. National Security Council, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of International Affairs, and the Energy Information Administration.  His primary focus has been the modeling and analysis of domestic and international energy markets, especially as it relates to government preparations for and responses to supply disruptions. In addition to his government service, Mr. Sweetnam has held senior planning, evaluation, and risk management positions at several energy companies, including Reliant Energy, Koch Industries, ARCO, and Fina Oil and Chemical Company.  He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and Masters of Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley.

    The emerging markets in Asia have achieved strong GDP and power consumption growth over the past decade, and the region’s economies are expected to continue expanding at a similar pace through 2050. With the climate targets announced by the countries, there are unique challenges faced by the emerging markets. How can countries decarbonize while growing? How can the energy transition move ahead while balancing decarbonization, affordability and energy security? What policy tools could effectively support the energy transition in those markets? Which new low-carbon technologies would penetrate those markets?
