Cathy Crawford

S&P Global

Associate Director, Research & Analysis

Cathy Crawford, is the director of GHG Accounting and Estimation at S&P Global, focusing on understanding and estimating life-cycle GHG emissions of hydrocarbon extraction through to combustion. Her expertise includes GHG accounting and carbon management in the oil and gas sector, other industrial sectors, as well as the built environment. Prior to joining S&P Global, she was a senior technical advisor for the GHG Environmental Priority Area with Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA). In this role, Ms. Crawford provided leadership in facilitating effective collaboration to accelerate environmental performance. She holds an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Calgary, Canada and is based in Calgary.

Sessions With Cathy Crawford

Tuesday, 8 March

  • 10:30am - 11:15am (CST) / 08/mar/2022 04:30 pm - 08/mar/2022 05:15 pm

S&P Global | The Right Measure: A guidebook to crude oil life-cycle GHG emissions estimation

    Workshop Upstream Oil & Gas

Subtle differences can be found between estimates and studies into the life-cycle GHG intensity of crude oil that limit our understanding. These differences, although subtle, ultimately are impacting our confidence in our ability to understand the relative competitiveness of different sources of supply. This session will review the key findings of a large public IHS Markit study into the sources of these differences, guidance that was developed about what can be done to improve alignment, and the creation of a Data Quality Metric aimed at improving the communication of estimate quality.

  • 03:30pm - 04:10pm (CST) / 08/mar/2022 09:30 pm - 08/mar/2022 10:10 pm

Meeting the Methane Challenge: Incorporating measurement methods

    Panel Carbon Management/Decarbonization

Methane (CH4) is a more potent GHG than CO2. Methane emissions are often unintentional, making them difficult to assess. There is increasing pressure to find, measure, and reduce methane emissions. What is the state of our understanding of oil and gas methane emissions? What steps are being taken to address methane emissions? What is the outlook for the pace of methane emission reductions?

Wednesday, 9 March

  • 12:00pm - 12:50pm (CST) / 09/mar/2022 06:00 pm - 09/mar/2022 06:50 pm

Managing Hydrocarbon Emissions Across the Value Chain

    Panel Markets/Economics/Strategy

GHG emissions have emerged as a key competitive metric for oil and gas companies. The debate around the short- and long-term roles of oil and gas in the energy transition is now mainstream, contentious, and shifting. What is the state of GHG emissions understanding (or lack thereof)? How could rising oil and gas ambition impact the outlook? What practical steps are companies taking to reduce their GHG footprint, particularly regarding methane? What is the path forward for the industry?
