Christoph Reinhart

Christoph Reinhart is a building scientist and architectural educator working in the fields of sustainable building design and environmental modeling. As a professor in building technology at MIT, Dr. Reinhart is leading the Sustainable Design Lab (SDL), an inter-disciplinary group with a grounding in architecture that develops design workflows, planning tools, and metrics to evaluate the environmental performance of buildings and neighborhoods. Dr. Reinhart is also the Chief Executive Officer of Solemma, a technology company and Harvard University spinoff, as well as Strategic Development Advisor for Mapdwell, a solar mapping company and MIT spinoff. Design tools originating from SDL and Solemma—such as DIVA, DAYSIM, UMI, and ALFA—are used in practice and education in over 90 countries. A physicist by training, Dr. Reinhart is the author of over 130 peer-reviewed scientific articles, seven book chapters, and two textbooks on daylighting. Among his many awards are the Fraunhofer Bessel Prize by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the IBPSA-USA Distinguished Achievement Award, and seven best paper awards. Dr. Reinhart holds a doctorate in architecture from the Technical University of Karlsruhe, one of Germany’s largest research and educational institutions.
