Howard Gatiss

Chief Executive Officer

Howard Gatiss is the Chief Executive Officer of CMC – Coal Marketing, a company that he set up in January 2003 as a sister company and commercial division of Carbones del Cerrejón, Colombia. Exports have risen from 18 million tonnes (2002) to 31 million mt in 2018. CMC covers the whole of the Atlantic market from the United States, Central, and South America to Europe and has in recent years began to develop a customer base in Asia. CMC and Cerrejón are owned in equal parts by Anglo American, BHP and Glencore. Prior to starting CMC – Coal Marketing, he worked with Shell across the world in a variety of disciplines; oil trader, marketing manager, and business development manager, culminating in his position of Chief Executive Officer of the downstream businesses in Vietnam, which included lubricants, bitumen, and chemicals. He left Shell in 1997 to establish BICC, a British cable manufacturer, in China. BICC was acquired by Pirelli in 2000. He became of Chief Executive Officer of Pirelli Power Cables China and integrated the operations of the two companies. Mr. Gatiss graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in economics.
