Sir John Scarlett, KCMG OBE, former Chief, British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS or MI6), served as Chief from 2004 to 2009. He joined SIS in 1971. Over the next 20 years, Sir John served in Nairobi, Paris, twice in Moscow, and held several assignments in London. In September 2001, he was appointed Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) in the Cabinet Office. On 1 August 2004, Sir John re-joined SIS as its Chief. Current roles include Senior Advisor, Morgan Stanley; Chairman, Strategy Advisory Council, Equinor; Advisor to Swiss Re; Chairman, SC Strategy Ltd; Director, Times Newspaper Holdings; Vice Chairman, Royal United Services Institute (RUSI); Chairman; and Co-Chair, Global Advisory Council, Woodrow Wilson Center, Washington, DC. Sir John was appointed a member of the State Honours Committee by the Cabinet Office in 2017. Sir John was appointed Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in 1987, Commander of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) in 2001, Knight Commander of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) in 2007 and Officier of the Légion d’Honneur in 2011. Sir John holds a degree from Oxford University.
