Vice President, CCUS

Michael Ryan is the Vice President, Carbon Capture Utilization & Storage of the Oil & Gas Climate Initiative’s Climate Investments and has over 30 years of oil & gas experience. Before joining OGCI in February 2019, Mr Ryan was the General Manager of Commercial for Chevron’s Southern Africa Business unit and the General Manager of Trading for Chevron’s Europe, Eurasia & West Africa region. He held leadership positions in other midstream, upstream & downstream operations in the US, Kazakhstan, UK and Angola. Prior to Chevron, Mike worked in France & India on a number of large gas pipeline projects. He holds an MS in Chemical Engineering from Rice University and a BS in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University. He is based in Houston.

    Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is seen as vital in 2C scenarios. Yet, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), the most widespread utilization and storage option, draws most of its CO2 from existing reservoirs and not from emissions. While there is potential for large-scale implementation of CCUS, many challenges impede this. Today, the list of CO2 sourcing, capture, utilization, and storage options is expanding, and new technology could further reduce costs. What business models will allow these new options? How will they drive scale?
