James Bellingham

Director, Consortium for Marine Robotics

James Bellingham, Ph.D., is the founding Director of the Center for Marine Robotics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Mr. Bellingham is a pioneer in the development of autonomous marine robots. He has led and participated in research expeditions around the world from the Arctic to the Antarctic. In addition to his current role, he has also founded the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Laboratory at MIT, and cofounded Bluefin Robotics - now owned by General Dynamics. He serves on numerous advisory committees and boards, including the Secretary of the Navy Advisory Panel and several National Academies studies. He chaired the Naval Research Advisory Committee, which advised the Secretary of the Navy. Mr. Bellingham has been awarded the Lockheed Martin Award for Ocean Science and Engineering and the MIT Fourteenth Robert Bruce Wallace lecturer. He holds a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
