Visiting Senior Research Scholar

Mauricio Cardenas, Latin American Economist, is a Visiting Senior Research Scholar at Columbia University's Center on Global Energy Policy. As Colombia’s Finance Minister between 2012 and 2018, Mr. Cardenas handled the oil shock, implementing a successful adjustment program that preserved high investment rates and sharp reductions in poverty and inequality. He has been a Minister in four other portfolios: Economic Development (Industry and Housing), Transport, Planning, Mines and Energy. Dr. Cardenas’s academic experience is mostly associated with Fedesarrollo, where he has twice been Executive Director, and the Brookings Institution, where he has been Senior Fellow and Director of the Latin America Initiative. He alos teaches at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) on Fiscal Policies for Development, combining theory and practice. Dr. Cardenas holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.
