Four linked themes—Signposts from 2020, character of enterprise, Innovative technology, and the politics of climate change—guide this plenary session’s insights into the role of gas in the energy future. What are the lessons of 2020 for the future of gas? Will supply chain bottleneck challenges be a regular feature for the industry? From start-ups driven by individual entrepreneurship to state-owned entities, gas companies are highly diverse: How will these organizations develop and work together in the gas industry of the future? Recent decades saw new technologies transform gas demand and gas supply. CCGT opened the generation of electricity to gas, increasing efficiency and reducing emissions as it did so; the shale gas revolution transformed supply, with geopolitical impact. Are there prospects for new transformative technological innovations in gas? Emissions management and carbon removal continue to drive international political discourse: How will the politics of climate change influence the role of gas in the energy future?
